Founded in 2005, University for the Creative Arts (UCA) is a specialist creative arts university in the United Kingdom. The origin of the university goes back to the nineteenth century with the establishment of various small art schools in the English counties of Kent and Surrey. The first of these was the Maidstone College of Art which was established in 1867. It has since then changed names and was named the University of the Creative Arts in 2008 after being granted university status.

The University is based at four campuses all over England, and each campus reflects a unique portfolio of over 110 specialist creative courses. The University has campuses in Rochester, Epsom, Canterbury and Farnham. All campuses are located in inspiring green spaces within the heart of the UK’s creative industries and about an hour’s train journey of central London.

The University’s other campuses are the Royal School of Needlework, based in Hampton Court Palace and the Maidstone TV Studios, which is the largest independent studio facility in the UK.


UCA is one of the top creative arts universities, offering courses in Film, Performing Arts, Architecture, Design, Fashion, Art and Creative Business across Surrey and Kent.

UK National Rankings

The Times University Guide2022

UCA has risen to 69th place from 75th last year in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide according to the latest editions of University rankings. The University is ranked 38th place for teaching quality and among the top 10 Universities in Southeast.

The Guardian University Guide 2022

UCA is ranked 32nd in the UK according to the Guardian University Guide’s most recent edition of University rankings. Business Management & Marketing, Journalism, Publishing and PR, and Architecture are ranked among the Top 10 subjects on The Guardian’s subject league tables. In addition, the University also rose to 5th in the league table in Journalism, Publishing and PR and Architecture provision has risen to 7th place from 28th last year.
